Here are a list of outstanding questions that have come up in previous episodes that I still haven’t gotten any answers to. If you have any info to add about any of these topics, let me know at thetalkingmachinepodcast at gmail dot com.

  • Victor label size – I have observed several different label sizes on 10″ Victor records. These are all 1914-1926 “bat wing” black Victor labels. I haven’t found any definitive explanation for the inconsistency in size when one would expect it to be standardized.
  • “Higher up the Cherry Tree” – A folk song my father mentioned in episode 3 that I have yet to find out any more information about or any recordings of.
  • Otto Motzan and Henry W. Santly – Composers of “Marie” from episode 6; interested in any biographical information.
  • Jacob Louis Merkur – Composer of “Rosie” from episode 8; biographical information.
  • Grant Clarke – Lyricist of “Rosie” from episode 8; biographical information.
  • Tod Weinhold – Tenor performer of “My Gee Gee (From the Fiji Isle)” from episode 8 ; biographical information.
  • Richard Howard – Composer of “When the Leaves Come Tumbling Down” from episode 10; biographical information. Note there are apparently multiple composers/musicians/songwriters with the name Richard Howard or Dick Howard so a link to this song should be established.
  • Louis Breau – Composer of “Zenda” from episode 10; biographical information.
  • Will Collins – Composer of “Falling” from episode 11; biographical information.
  • Ed Cameron – Composer of “Falling” from episode 11; biographical information.
  • Victor Spanish Subtitles – Why do some Victor labels include Spanish subtitles when others do not? Why do the Spanish subtitles not always seem to correspond with the songs?
  • Julián Robledo – Composer of “Three O’clock in the Morning” from episode 15; biographical information
  • Ethel Bridges – Composer of “Beautiful Hawaiian Love” from episode 18; biographical information
  • Ralph Howard – Composer of “Hawaiian Hours with You” from episode 18; any information at all
  • “Hawaiian Hours with You” from episode 18; sheet music/lyrics
