Today is Tuesday, March 23, 2010, and it is a good day for a run.

A great day for a run, actually; after this weekend’s cold snap, temps were back up in to the fifties and the sun was out. I did my Tuesday two-mile easy run, and enjoyed it the whole way. No interesting stories to tell, although afterward, when I was stretching in the gym, my friend/co-worker Nick was picking my brain about my run today and my running in general, because he and another co-worker had just made plans to start running outside together since it is nice out. I’ve been having more and more conversations with co-workers about running lately; probably because it is on people’s minds now that it is getting nice enough to make people want to get outside and do stuff after being inside all winter. Also, I am still actively pursuing getting people signed up for my work Crazylegs team, so I’ve been putting the bug in people’s collective ear, so to speak. Anyway, I told him I would share some courses I have laid out around work.

Today is Thursday, March 18, 2010, and it is a good day for a run.

Ah, Thursday speedwork. You never make it easy for me. As if seven miles of intervals wasn’t tough enough, life had to conspire to make it even harder.

Today is Tuesday, February 23, 2010, and it is a good day for a run.

Here I am, watching the Olympics again, and they are blissfully taking a break from figure skating to show the cross-country skiing portion of the Nordic combined team competition. Fantastic. They just showed the American team training and in one part, they were cross-country skiing indoor on a treadmill. Amazing. It was like a super-wide treadmill with a flexible belt, and the guy was using skis with wheels on them. I guess I never thought about what it would be like if I was in a sport where you absolutely could not participate in it year-round. Running in the snow is not ideal, but I can do it. But you just can’t cross-country ski without snow. Even playing Ultimate Frisbee, which I choose not to do in winter, I still could play indoors if I had the time and money to do so. Speed skating and hockey and other ice sports can be played indoors on man-made ice. There are snow machines, sure, but it would be a tall order to create enough snow for a full 10k cross-country course.

Today is Monday, February 22, 2010, and it is a good day for a run.

Yesterday was long run day, and the last day of week two of marathon training. For once, the run wasn’t the sole focus of my day, because it was a day that I had marked on the calendar for months: the Iowa-Wisconsin wrestling dual in Madison.

I haven’t gotten to see the Hawkeye wrestlers in person since they came to Madison two years ago for this dual, and this year Iowa wrestling has just been tearing through opponents, especially in the big ten, which is hands-down the best wrestling conference in the country. So I’ve been looking forward to it for a while. I was not going to miss it, but of course, I’m not about to miss my long run either. So to accommodate both, I planned to head out almost right away when I got up, so I could be done in time to get to the meet.

Today is Monday, January 25, 2010, and it is a good day for a run.

No run today though; strength training day on Monday as usual. I didn’t write yesterday night because I was busy watching the Vikings fumbling their trip to the Super Bowl away. The Vikes have never been to the Super Bowl in my lifetime, but I have had the pleasure of watching them lose four NFC championship games now. At least two of which, including this one, they should have won. On the other hand, the Hawkeye wrestlers shut out Michigan in the Big Ten opener and then won eight of ten matches at Purdue this weekend. But hey, isn’t this supposed to be about running?

Today is Tuesday, January 12, 2010, and it is a good day for a run.

It looked like it was going to be a great day for a run: the sun was shining, the temperature was mild; it was going to be a beautiful day and I couldn’t wait to get out in it. I even had dug up an old five-mile course by work that I had forgotten about and that I was sure would be clear of snow. There was only one problem: my left heel hurts like hell.

Today is Wednesday, January  6, 2010, and it is a good day for a run.

Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to run today. I didn’t have any workout at all, in fact, although I maybe could have if I really tried. Back at work this week, which means back to lunchtime workouts; today would have been a strength training day, but Anna and the kids came to have lunch with me today, and that was more important. I’ll strength train on Friday.

Yesterday was Tuesday, January 5, and it was also a good day for a run. And fortunately for me I did run yesterday. I didn’t get to write about it yesterday, however, since I spent my time after work watching the Iowa Hawkeyes shut down the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the Orange Bowl with 50 or so of my closest black-and-gold clad Madisonian friends whom I had never met before.  It was a great game and I am still riding the high from it.
